What is Oxfam International?

Oxfam International, founded in 1995, is an international partnership of 10 independent non-government organisations. Member organisations are of diverse cultures, history, and language, but share the commitment to working for an end to the waste and injustice of poverty - both in longer-term development work and in times of urgent humanitarian need. The individual Oxfams work in different ways but have a common purpose: addressing the structural causes of poverty and related injustice. Oxfams work primarily through local organisations in more than 120 countries. Together, in 1996/7 we raised over US $335 million to support the fight against poverty.

The Oxfam International Secretariat is a small team of staff which coordinates communication and co-operation between 10 members from its base in Oxford, UK.

The Washington Advocacy Office, was set up in 1995 with a staff of three, lobbies the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the United Nations on issues agreed by 10 members.
